Western Water Study: Utah
Water use in Utah is defined as total water use. The most recently available water use volumes are from 2001 for irrigation water and 2010 for all other water uses. Water uses in Utah are categorized as public community, public non-community, self-supplied industry, private domestic, and irrigation. Oil and natural gas water use is not specifically monitored in Utah, and falls within the self-supplied industrial water use category, which includes such disparate uses as manufacturing plants, oil and natural gas, mining, mink farms, and dairies. Water use for the self-supplied industry category in Utah is 4.6% of total water use. Since oil and natural gas is a subset of the much larger self-supplied industrial category, its water use would be a much lower percentage of the total.
