Western Water Study: Wyoming
Water use in Wyoming is managed and tracked by seven river basins. Wyoming reports both total water use and consumptive use. For this study, total water use is presented.
The river basins are presented separately in the report and not aggregated into a single number for the state because the data were collected during different years. However, the volumes presented in the Golder report are the best available data considered “current water use” for each river basin according to the State Water Plan.
The volume of water used for oil and natural gas activities in Wyoming is minimal relative to the other water uses in the state. Oil and natural gas use for each of the seven river basins is as follows:
- Bear - 0.05%
- Green - 0.3%
- Northeast - 4.9%
- Platte - 1.2%
- Powder/Tongue - 9%
- Snake/Salt - 0%
- Wind/Bighorn - 0%
