Oil and natural gas trade association Western Energy Alliance filed a lawsuit today challenging the Bureau of Land Management’s failure to hold quarterly oil and natural gas lease sales for public lands.

BLM manages nearly 700 million acres of minerals on public lands across the United States. Under existing law, the agency is required to hold quarterly oil and natural gas lease sales in state where both industry interest and lands appropriate for energy development exist. Over the past two years, BLM has not kept up.

WESTERN ENERGY ALLIANCE IS ASKING THE COURTS TO COMPEL BLM TO FOLLOW A DECADES-OLD LAW, WHICH WOULD MEAN HOLDING QUATERLY LEASE SALES IN EVERY OIL AND NATURAL GAS STATE. (Link)

TODAY, FOR EXAMPLE, BLM WAS SUPPOSED TO HOLD A LEASE SALE IN COLORADO, WHICH WAS CANCELLED. IN NEW MEXICO, TWO LEASE SALES WERE HELD IN 2015, WITH ONLY ONE PLANNED IN 2016, DESPITE THE REQUIREMENT TO HOLD FOUR EVERY YEAR. (Link)

Oil and natural gas lease have been targeted by the anti-fossil fuel activists and the Keep-It-in-the-Ground movement.

Environmental groups have been pushing the federal government to end public lands leasing through frequent protests across the country.

THE KEEP-IT-IN-THE-GROUND MOVEMENT IS TRYING TO COERCE BLM INTO VIOLATING THE LAW. YET WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING, ACTIVISTS COULD achieve THE SAME GOAL JUST BY LEAVING BLM TO ITS OWN DEVICES. WHO NEEDS LOUD PROTESTS WHEN BUREAUCRATS ARE DOING THE SAME THING BY NOT DOING THEIR JOBS? (Link)

Last year, oil and natural gas companies returned $171 million to taxpayers for leases sold by BLM. That figure could be substantially higher had the agency held lease sales regularly.
