EPA Recognizes Need for Workable Methane Regulations
October 28, 2026
DENVER – Western Energy Alliance welcomed the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) proposed revisions to federal methane regulations for new and existing oil and natural gas operations this week. The agency’s proposal would revise several overreaching requirements under the Clean Air Act Sections OOOOb and OOOOc, including provisions affecting smaller and lower-producing wells that produce approximately 10% of our nation’s oil and natural gas.
“Americans are feeling the strain of high energy costs, including every time they pull up to the pump. Western states have abundant oil and natural gas resources that can meet our nation’s energy needs,” said Melissa Simpson, president of the Alliance. “To do so affordably, federal regulations need to reflect variations on the ground in different regions without unnecessarily making it harder or more expensive to produce that energy. They also need to account for marginal wells that may be small individually, but together produce a meaningful share of American production. Sensible rules can protect the environment while keeping American energy production online and helping bring down costs for consumers. We appreciate EPA taking another look at these regulations”
